Maynard Sinclair Pavilion |
|
|
Its lengthy name is the 'Maynard Sinclair Pavilion' and it belongs to the Northern Ireland Civil Service (NICS) Sports and Social Club.
The building is funded by NI's civil servants through monthly donations from their salaries,
and the tent is able to use the facilities courtesy of Keith and Gerry who have
both made monthly donations for more years than they care to recomember! The 'Pavilion' as it is better known, is set in Stormont's magnificent grounds. There is car parking a-plenty, and the entrance to the grounds is on the main Belfast - Dundonald - Newtownards bus route. The Pavilion caters for disabled people too — there is a drop arm barrier and intercom so that blue-badge holders can gain access to disabled parking spaces just outside the main door. Inside the front door are some mini-turnstiles operated by a swipe card — these should be opened for our meeting but if not the staff will grant you access when you say where you are going.
As if all of that weren't enough the room has its own private bar with drinks at club prices. And there's even more... The room has a sliding glass wall that opens out onto a very large raised balcony, complete with tables and chairs, which overlooks Stormont's magnificent international cricket grounds! The spacious
suite also has the capability of further expansion; should that prove
necessary a partition
wall can be opened to enlarge the room by well over 50%. What a venue! And there's yet more good news. Since the tent can no longer provide free wine and soft drinks it has lowered its entry charges and introduced further discounts for families of 4 or more! The feedback from members about our new venue has been extremely encouraging. Members recognise, of course, that the atmosphere is not quite what it was at the Tudor — the perfect Laurel and Hardy venue — but have noticed that the room, which is set out in round tables and comfy chairs, provides for a better 'club' atmosphere, and it is noticeable that members and/or children are mixing and chatting more. The room also provides better room for the large display of Laurel and Hardy memorabilia which is on sale in the tent's shop. Knowing all this you simply have to come along — see you there!
