Dates for 2008 Our meeting dates for 2008 are printed below. They are to be held, as usual, in the Maynard Sinclair Pavilion, off the Upper Newtownards Road (near Dundonald House) and will kick off at 7.00pm for 7.30pm. Please note that since young kids are present we will adhere fairly strictly to our timetable so the events will begin at 7.30pm sharp...if you're late you'll miss out! Don't forget to write these dates firmly into your diaries...and tell all your friends: Saturday 8 March 2008 Saturday 14 June 2008 Saturday 20 September 2008 Saturday 29 November 2008
We look forward to seeing you there. What happens at the meetings? There is no mystique about our meetings (contrary to popular opinion): a typical night begins with some welcoming words from the Grand Sheik. Then Gerry gives a bit of background about the first movie (he does this for each one) and we kick things off. The second movie is usually one of the boys' classic silent movies, and on its conclusion we have an interval. This gives members the chance to socialise while raffle tickets are sold for some excellent Laurel and Hardy-ware. It is also an opportunity for everyone to charge their glasses in time for part two... The Grand and Vice Sheiks, and some special guest toasters (guest what?), raise their glasses for the traditional toast to the boys and their major foils. This is followed by the FREE members' only draw, and then the draws to determine the raffle winners. On to the main business of the evening... Gerry, as usual, introduces the final film/s of the night. It/they can be a full feature length movie or 2 of the sound-era two or three reelers. After that the Grand Sheik thanks everyone for coming along and provides details of the next meeting. Some members like to stay behind for some drinks and/or a chat while others, especially those in family units, head off home. That's it; we're not odd...well, not that odd! Why go to a meeting when we've got the DVDs at home? Those who have never been often wonder whether it is worthwhile making the effort to come out to attend our meetings when they have the DVDs at home. This is a natural reaction that all of us have experienced. After attending a meeting the reasons become very clear... watching a Laurel and Hardy film on the big screen with a live (or mostly live!) audience, especially when there are children present, totally transforms the movies. Proof of that, if proof be needed, is evident in our membership: we have members who regularly make the trip up from Dublin, or Limerick, or even Southend-on-Sea just to be with us! Now that surely says something about the experience! Give us a try and if you don't like it then there's no need to come back, but we're pretty sure that you will...probably with some friends! Those not interested need not apply! See you next time...! |
